These are challenging times for all of us. Restrictions to normal life and extended periods of time at home place a strain on anyone, and we all need to look after our mental health.
An important part of our wellbeing is regular exercise, and it doesn’t hurt to have some motivation.
Base to Bush is a new virtual event for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) Victoria.
It is an opportunity for you and your mates to walk, run or cycle over 6 weeks – building regular exercise to virtually travel from our Airbase at Essendon Fields to one of three Flying Doctor Wellbeing locations in the Bush.
Not only will you challenge yourself and support your own wellbeing, you will have the opportunity to support Flying Doctor Wellbeing – our free mental health service.
It doesn’t matter if you’re a walker, a casual cyclist or a marathon runner, there’s a ‘Base to Bush’ challenge for you – and by forming a team you can share the load and motivate your mates.
By virtually travelling from our Airbase to your nominated Flying Doctor Wellbeing service location, you will be bridging the distance and isolation that affects so many of our mates in the Bush, all whilst supporting your own wellbeing.
‘Flying Doctor Wellbeing’ is a key part of our commitment to bringing high quality health care to people in the bush. The program provides vital mental health support specifically for people in rural and remote Victoria, with counselling services available in person (or via telehealth) at no cost. As a largely donor-funded organisation, supporters are pivotal to our success.
What we have achieved so far
You can complete this challenge as an individual or a team and complete the KMs on your treadmill, exercise bike or outside*.
*Please ensure that you practise social distancing by keeping 1.5 metres away from others to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

You do not have to run, walk or cycle every day, but it helps.
So long as you complete your distance goal over the 6 week period.
Base to Halls Gap
250km over 6 weeks - approx. 5.9km a day
Base to Warracknabeal
325km over 6 weeks - approx. 7.5km a day
Base to Cann River
461km over 6 weeks - approx. 10.5km a day
